George V Silver Cigarette Holder & Case, 1919
This is a stylish George V Sterling Silver Cigarette Holder with an Amber mouthpiece complete with its original case. The holder is decorated with scrolls and foliage and the outside of the case with textured foliage. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The holder and case were made in Birmingham by Villers & Jackson and date to 1919. Villers & Jackson registered their mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1890 with later marks being registered in Chester and Sheffield. They were based in the Jewellery Quarter and primarily made smoking accessories, fruit knives and pens and pencils. The company remained in business until the start of WW2.
Condition is good, with just a small dent to the lid of the case plus the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 105 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Cased up the set is 7.1cm / 2.8ins long and 1.2cm /0.47ins in diameter. It weighs in at 7.8g / 0.27oz.
The hallmarks, on both the holder and the case, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1919 and the V & J makers' mark for Villers & Jackson.
