George V Silver & Gilt Snuff Box, Birmingham, 1925

This is a George V Sterling Silver Engine Turned Snuff Box with a Silver Gilt interior. The snuff box is made in Birmingham by noted silversmiths Adie & Lovekin Ltd and dates to 1925. Founded in Birmingham around 1879, Adie & Lovekin specialized in making very high quality personal items for nearly fifty years until they closed around 1927.
The snuff box is oval and has engine turned decoration both top and bottom. There is a blank cartouche on the hinged lid and a loop on one side of the box which could be used to attach it to a chain. The inside of the box is gilded making it a very luxurious item.
This is certainly a snuff box that has been used and very possibly kept in a pocket with other bits and pieces. There are some tiny dings around the box and the engine turning has become a little rubbed away from much handling. The lid remains tight fitting and the hinge works perfectly. The gilding inside the box is in good condition with just a little thinning on the inside of the lid. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The snuff box is 6cm / 2.4" long and 3.6cm / 1.4" wide. It weighs in at 21.8g / 0.77oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the box are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "A" for 1925 and the ALLd makers' mark for Adie & Lovekin Ltd. In addition, the inside of the lid is marked with the lion passant for Sterling Silver and the date letter "A" for 1925.
