Art Deco Silver Compact, Broadway & Co, 1935

This is a very stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Powder Compact from the 1930s. The compact is basically square. The front and back are engine turned with a blank oblong cartouche on the front and typically Art Deco "Odeon" style stepped decoration on either side. The mirror is set into the lid with the powder compartment in the base.
The compact was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Broadway & Co and dates to 1935. Broadway & Co was founded by William Benjamin Broadway in Birmingham in 1901. The firm quickly established a reputation for good quality workmanship and produced a wide range of silverware for personal and domestic use. The company, now called Broadway Silversmiths, remains under the control of the Broadway family to this day and still uses many of the original dies and tools from the early years of the company.
Condition is good, with just a few little dings in the back and the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Much of its life has probably been spent in a handbag so a few dings are to be anticipated! The hinge works smoothly and the compact clicks shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The compact measures 6.8cm / 2.7ins by 7.2cm / 2.8ins and is 0.6cm / 0.24ins deep. It weighs 76.3g / 2.7oz.
The hallmarks, on the inside base of the compact, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter L for 1935 and the B & Co makers' mark for Broadway & Co.
