George V Silver 6 Slice Toast Rack, London, 1918
Here we have a fine George V Sterling Silver Six Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has an oblong base with rounded corners and stands on four ball feet. The dividers have a flattened arch design and there is a round finger ring set onto the centre one.
The toast rack is made in London in 1918, right at the end of the First World War. It has the makers' mark for Cooper Brothers & Sons but this seems to have been struck over the top of a previous makers' mark, now obliterated. Cooper Brothers & Sons were a Sheffield firm who also had a showroom in London's Holborn Viaduct. It is most likely that another firm made the toast rack and that it was retailed by Cooper Brothers & Sons through their London store. It was a common practice and perfectly legal for retailers to overstrike makers' marks and lead to the marks being renamed sponsors' marks as the 20th century progressed.
Condition is very good with just a minor flat spot on one of the four ball feet, which results in a very slight rocking on a flat surface. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack is a well made piece in a good gauge of silver. It is 13.4cm long, 6.7cm wide and stands 9.7cm high. It weighs in at a substantial 153.6g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter c for 1918 and the C B & S makers' mark for Cooper Brothers & Sons with the ghost of a different mark below it.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack.
