George V Dressing Table Pot with Silver Lid, 1925
This is an attractive and stylish George V Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The pot is round, tapering up and out from a flat base. There are alternating panels of plain and tooth cut glass around the body and a star cut to the base. The round lid is plain with a shallow stepped centre and is gilded to the underside. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The lid is hallmarked for silversmith Samuel M. Levi of Birmingham and dates to 1925. Levi founded his firm in the 1880s remaining in personal control until 1931 when it became S.M. Levi Ltd. They made a range of primarily personal items including perfume bottles and dressing table pots. The firm ceased trading around the start of the Second World War.
Condition of the cut glass pot is very good with no chips or cracks. The silver lid is in generally good condition with just a few little dings and the surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot is 9.6cm / 3.8ins in diameter and stands 6.4cm / 2.5ins high. The silver lid by itself weighs in at a very respectable 15.9g / 0.56oz of solid Sterling Silver, whilst all together the pot weighs 315.6g / 11.1oz.
The hallmarks on the side of the lid are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter A for 1925 and the S.M.L makers' mark for Samuel M. Levi.
