George IV Silver Chamberstick, Matt. Boulton, 1829
Here we have a fine quality George IV Sterling Silver Small Chamberstick. The chamberstick has a circular base, a lobed rim with leaf decoration and a part reeded urn shaped sconce. The removable nozzle has a matching lobed rim and the scrolling handle has acanthus leaf decoration. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The chamberstick was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths The Matthew Boulton Plate Co and dates to 1829. Matthew Boulton registered his mark at Birmingham’s assay office in 1774, just a few months after the office was established, for which he was principally responsible. He had a long and successful career producing a wide range of fine quality silverware and some of the best Old Sheffield Plate ever made. After his death in 1809 the firm was renamed The Matthew Boulton Plate Company and remained in business until it was finally sold in 1848.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after 195 years of good service. There is a ring and a bracket on the sconce which would once have held a snuffer but sadly this has been lost at some point in time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The chamberstick is 7.5cm / 2.95ins from rim to handle, 7cm / 2.75ins across and 4cm / 1.57ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 86.3g / 3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the rim of the base, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter F for 1829, the George III duty mark (the George IV mark was only introduced later in 1829) and the M B makers' mark for The Matthew Boulton Plate Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the chamberstick.
