George IV Silver Chamberstick, Joseph Angell, 1828

Here we have a handsome George IV Sterling Silver Chamberstick. It stands on a circular rim base and has a lobed circular drip tray with line and leaf decoration. The sconce is urn shaped and has a removable nozzle with a lobed rim matching the drip tray. The handle has an acanthus leaf on the top and the snuffer is conical. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
This is a small chamberstick that would have sat on a desk or dressing table both to provide light and to melt sealing wax for correspondence and documents.
The chamberstick was made in London by renowned silversmith Joseph Angell Snr and dates to 1828. The Angell family were highly regarded 19th century London silversmiths. Joseph Angell Snr was the first of the family to register his mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London, which he did in 1811. His brother John joined him as a partner in 1831 and his son Joseph Jnr in 1837. John set up on his own around 1840. Joseph Snr retired in 1848 and his son carried on the business, winning a medal at the Great Exhibition in 1851. John’s sons, John Charles and George, carried on their father’s business after his death.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the snuffer plus the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 195 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The chamberstick is 10.2cm / 4ins from rim to handle, 9.7cm / 3.8ins across the tray and stands 6cm / 2.3ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 184.6g / 6.5oz / 5.9toz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the bottom rim of the base, the nozzle and the snuffer, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter n for 1828, the George IV duty mark and the J A makers' mark for Joseph Angell Snr.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the chamberstick.
