This is an elegant George III Sterling Silver Sifter Spoon in the traditional Old English pattern. The bowl is shallow and flat based, which you would expect in a sifter of this period. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The sifter is made in London by Thomas Dicks and dates to 1789. This is a very early piece by Thomas Dicks who only started in business around this time. He was a very good specialist spoon maker who remained active until his death in 1832. For the last 10 years of his life he was in partnership with his son James.

Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced bowl and only the most minimal superficial surface wear. It has clearly been very well looked after for the last 232 years! Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The sifter spoon is 16.2cm / 6.4ins long and weighs a very respectable 41.8g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter o for 1789, the George III duty mark and the T.D makers' mark for Thomas Dicks.
