George III Silver Salt Spoon, George Smith, 1796

This is a good George III Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the classic Old English pattern from the late 18th century. The initials J M are elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The salt spoon was made in London by silversmith George Smith (III) and dates to 1796. George Smith (III) and George Smith (IV) were father and son silversmiths in London in the late 18th and early 19th century. George Smith Snr established the business in 1774 and was in partnership with William Fearn between 1786 and Fearn’s death in 1796. George Smith Jnr registered his mark and took over the business in 1798. He was in partnership with Richard Crossley from 1807 to 1812 when the latter retired.
Condition is good, with no salt corrosion, just two truly tiny dings in the bowl and the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 225 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 10cm / 3.9ins long and weighs in at 10.5g / 0.37oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed as you would expect but still nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter A for 1796, the George III duty mark and the G S makers' mark for George Smith (III).
