George III Silver Punch Ladle with Queen Anne Coin George III Georgian Silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have an 18th Century George III Sterling Silver Punch Ladle with a Queen Anne coin inset into the bowl and a barley twist whalebone handle. The initials W.L are elegantly engraved on the front of the bowl.

The ladle is made in London by Peter & Ann Bateman and dates to 1792. The coin is much earlier, being a 1711 sixpence from the reign of Queen Anne, last of the Stuart monarchs. Peter & Ann Bateman were the son and daughter-in-law of the famous Hester Bateman, Ann being the widow of Hester's son Jonathan.

Condition is very good with just the minimal wear and tear that you would expect in an item that is nearly 230 years old. There is some old silver solder where the stem joins the bowl, which suggests that this has been repaired at some point in the past. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The punch ladle is 34.4cm / 13.5ins long and the bowl is 7.4cm / 2.9ins across. It weighs in at 46.3g / 1.6oz but this does of course include the whalebone in the handle.

The hallmarks on the side of the bowl are somewhat rubbed but can still be read. They don't photograph very well as they are on the curve of the bowl but they show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter r for 1792, the George III duty mark and the PB over AB makers' mark for Peter & Ann Bateman.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the punch ladle.
