George III Silver Milk Jug, Solomon Hougham, 1786
Here we have a very fine quality George III Sterling Silver Milk Jug with a gilt interior. The rim of the jug and the base have beaded decoration and below that there is chased decoration on both the body and the base. The front of the jug is decorated with a ribbon and flowers around a central cartouche which has a crest of a lion's paw holding a coptic cross.
The jug is made in London by Solomon Hougham and dates to 1786. Solomon Hougham initially worked for his older brother Charles Hougham before later setting up on his own. Both Charles & Solomon were exceptional silversmiths and either name will guarantee that you have a very good quality piece of silver.
Overall condition of the jug is good but the base is slightly misshapen around the hallmark. There are a couple of small dings in the body and the usual surface wear that has to be expected after 235 years of service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The diameter of the base is 6.5cm / 2.55". It is 11.7cm / 4.6" from lip to handle, 7.2cm / 2.8" wide across the top and 16.7cm / 6.6" high to the top of the handle. It weighs a very substantial 224.4g / 7.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks around the rim of the base are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "l" for 1786, the George III duty mark and the SH makers' mark for Solomon Hougham.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the jug.
Overseas customers please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
