George III Silver Cream Jug, Hester Bateman, 1779
Here we have an exquisite George III Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The creamer is pear shaped with a drop bottom and a spreading pedestal foot, typical of the period. The body has a chased design of a rural scene featuring a sheep, a swan, cottages and trees. The cartouche at the front of the jug is blank.
The cream jug was made in London by legendary silversmith Hester Bateman and dates to 1779. The Bateman Family dominated silver production in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in flatware. The business was driven by the exceptional Hester Bateman who after being widowed in 1760 turned her husband’s insignificant silver firm into a hugely successful company. The business continued through three further generations.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 245 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 8.8cm / 3.4ins from lip to handle, 5.7cm / 2.2ins across the body and stands 11.8cm / 4.6ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 74.9g / 2.64oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are nice and clear to read with just some rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter d for 1779 and the distinctive script H B makers' mark for Hester Bateman.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
