Here we have a fine quality George II Sterling Silver Table Salt. The salt is of cauldron form with a ribbed rim and stands on three hoof feet. There is a monogram of the initials E A F elegantly engraved on the side of the body.

The salt was made in London in 1739. The makers' mark is B B which is probably that of silversmith Benjamin Blakely, who was active at this time.

Condition is good with just a few minor dents around the body, which we can forgive it after over 280 years of service on the dining table. The interior appears to have originally been gilded but most of the gold has been polished away by many long years of cleaning, however there is no salt corrosion of any significance. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt is of a good size, measuring 7cm / 2.75ins in diameter and standing 4.3cm / 1.7ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 68.4g / 2.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are quite rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter d for 1739 and the B B makers' mark, which is probably that of Benjamin Blakely.
