French Art Nouveau Silver Mignardises Serving Set
This is an exquisite French Art Nouveau Solid Silver 4 Piece Mignardises serving set in its original box from c.1900. Mignardises are bite size pastries and desserts traditionally served at the end of a meal and this four piece set offers different pieces for serving the various treats. It is an elegant tradition that adds a truly sophisticated finish to any dinner or works equally well at high tea. The four pieces have pierced blades and bowls and matching handles in a classic Art Nouveau style, typical of French pieces from the late 19th and early 20th century. There is no personalisation of any kind.
Each piece has a Minerva silver mark at the top of the handle but these are somewhat distorted by the shaping of the handles. There is a makers' mark on the serving end of each piece. The name on the box is Maison P. Vernay of Place Puget in Toulon, France. This is one of the city's most famous squares and only a high end retailer would have been there at the time this set was made and sold.
The Mignardises servers are in excellent overall condition with no dings or dents and just a minimal amount of wear. The outside of the box is a little scuffed and marked in places. The catch on the clasp is missing but the hinges are in good working order. The silk lining inside the lid is in fair condition, just wearing thin in a couple of places where it has rubbed on the serving pieces. The silk covering the hinge has largely frayed away. The velvet tray in which the pieces are set is again in fair condition. Please make sure you look at all the photos.
The fork is 17.8cm long, the flat server is 17.4cm long, the pierced spoon is 16.4cm long and the cake knife is 19.7cm long. The set of 4 combined weighs in at a substantial 129.6g.
The Minerva mark on each handle is somewhat distorted but shows they are definitely solid silver. The makers' mark on each serving end is a cursive "L" but I have not been able to identify who this represents.
