Edwardian Small Silver Claret Jug, Birmingham 1901
This is a very good quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Small Claret Jug or possibly a hot water jug in the shape of a claret jug. It is the classic Georgian style and shape with a fan thumb rest, very much in keeping with the Georgian Revival of the Edwardian era. The handle is cane wrapped, which may be for comfort or may be for insulation if used for hot water. A large letter H is elegantly engraved on the top of the lid.
The claret jug is made in Birmingham by silversmiths Jones & Crompton and dates to 1901. Edward Jones founded the firm in the early 1890s with Hubert Crompton joining the company in 1899. They remained in business, supplying good quality silver to many top department stores, until the early 1930s.
Condition is generally very good with just a few small dings in the main body of the jug. The cane wrapping on the handle is in good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug stands 18cm / 7.1ins high, is 12.7cm / 5ins from lip to handle and 6.7cm / 2.6ins in diameter across the base. It weighs a very substantial 233.3g / 8.2oz, with just a tiny amount of this being the cane wrapping.
The hallmarks, about halfway up the neck of the jug, are somewhat rubbed but still easy to decipher. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter b for 1901 and the J & C in a shield makers' mark for Jones & Crompton.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jug.
