Edwardian Silver Toast Rack, Walker & Hall, 1907
This is a top quality, heavyweight Edwardian Sterling Silver 5 Slice Toast Rack with attached Crumb Tray. The crumb tray is boat shaped with a gadrooned rim and stands on four bobbin feet with the arched toast rack rising above it. The initials WGB are elegantly engraved on the surface of the crumb tray.
The toast rack is made in Sheffield by Walker & Hall and dates to 1907. Founded by 1845 by George Walker, who was joined by Henry Hall in 1853, Walker & Hall are one of the most famous names in English silver. They manufactured primarily in Sheffield and had retail stores first in London and then throughout the UK, Australia and South Africa. They ceased to exist in the 1960s when they became merged into British Silverware Ltd.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of good service. It stands securely on its four feet with no rocking. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack is 20cm / 7.9ins long, 9.5cm / 3.7ins wide and stands 7.5cm / 2.9ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 233.2g / 8.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are well struck and clear to read. There is a full set on the upper side of the crumb tray showing the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter p for 1907 and the famous W & H inside a pennant makers' mark for Walker & Hall. In addition, the frame of the rack is marked with the lion passant, crown assay mark & W & H makers' mark, whilst each of the four feet are marked on the bottom with the lion passant and the W & H makers' mark.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack.
