Edwardian Silver Toast Rack, G'smiths & S'smiths
Here we have a top quality, heavyweight Edwardian Sterling Silver Six Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has a rectangular base with rounded corners which stands on four hexagonal feet. The dividers are high pointed arches with an additional strut on the middle one. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The toast rack was made in London by the renowned Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company and dates to 1901. Founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company occupied a famous showroom at 112 Regent Street where they served a high end clientele with goods of the very finest quality. They manufactured at Clerkenwell in London and the Regent Works in Sheffield. In 1952 they amalgamated with their Regent Street neighbours Garrard & Co.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service on the breakfast table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
As you would expect from The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co, this is a well made item in a heavy gauge of silver. It is 13.7cm / 5.4ins long by 7.2cm / 2.8ins wide and stands 11.5cm / 4.5ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 234.3g / 8.26oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1901 and the distinctive trefoil G & S Co Ld makers' mark for The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
