Edwardian Silver Teapot, Stokes & Ireland, 1902
Here we have an elegant and very fine quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Bachelor Teapot. The teapot is of circular bulbous form with repousse floral decoration all around the body and a high scalloped rim around the lid. There is a blank cartouche on one side of the body.
The teapot was made by renowned silversmiths Stokes & Ireland Ltd and assayed in Chester in 1902. The firm was established in Birmingham by William Henry Stokes & Arthur George Ireland in 1891 and operated from premises in Great Hampton Street in the famous Jewellery Quarter. Although Birmingham based, the majority of their pieces were assayed in Chester with only a few marked in their home town of Birmingham. They produced a very broad range of consistently good quality silverware and remained in business until the late 1930s.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. There are some marks on the handle from where the finial has rested against it over many years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot measures 20.5cm / 8.1ins from spout to handle, 10.8cm / 4.2ins across the body and stands 10cm / 3.9ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 448g / 15.8oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are very crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the script date letter B for 1902 and the S.I.Ld makers' mark for Stokes & Ireland Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the teapot.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
