Edwardian Silver Shoe Pin Cushion, Chester, 1909
This is a really charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Pin Cushion in the shape of a Shoe. The pin cushion has a wooden sole, a decorative band across the upper and a burgundy coloured pin cushion and ribbon lace. The pin cushion is the original Edwardian one, a little hard now but still perfectly serviceable. This would be perfect for any keen sewer to use today or make a great addition to a collection.
The pin cushion is made by S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd and assayed in Chester in 1909. S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd were founded in Birmingham around 1880 and remained in business until 1940. Like many Birmingham manufacturers they would often send small items to Chester to be assayed. The Chester office closed in 1962 and silver with the Chester mark is now very collectable.
Condition is good but the pin cushion has definitely seen some use by a regular sewer and there are a few small dings, though nothing that detracts from the attractiveness of the shoe. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The shoe pin cushion is a substantial size, being 12.7cm / 5ins long, 4.7cm / 1.8ins wide and 4.9cm / 1.9 high. It weighs in at 129.3g / 4.5oz but this obviously includes the wooden sole and the cushion.
The hallmarks on the side of the shoe are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter I for 1909 and the S.B & S. Ld makers' mark for S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd. On the other side is the registered design number 548913, which also dates the design to 1909.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the pin cushion.
