Edwardian Silver Mounted Match Strike / Holder, 1903
Here we have a very fine quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Mounted Match Strike & Holder. The match strike is made in Birmingham by Miller Brothers and dates to 1903. The Miller Brothers were based in Newgate Street, London and had marks registered at both the London and Birmingham assay offices. They were active between around 1897 and around 1920.
Most match strikers of this era have a thin silver rim around the top of the glass but this one has virtually half of the glass sphere covered in silver and it is beautifully decorated with feathers and scrolls. It also has a blank cartouche on the front. The glass sphere is ribbed to allow vesta matches to be struck on it and has a smooth flat bottom. This is definitely at the luxury end of the match striker scale!
Condition is very good, although it has definitely seen some use. There is one tiny rough spot on the glass and the silver has just the minimal wear you would expect after over 115 years of service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The striker is 5.5cm / 2.2" in diameter and 4.8cm / 1.8" high. It weighs 221.2g / 7.8oz.
The hallmarks, on the back of the silver cover, are clear to read apart from the makers' mark, which is somewhat rubbed but still easy to decipher. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "d" for 1903 and the M.Bros makers' mark for Miller Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the item.
