Edwardian Silver Vesta Case, Wm. Haseler, 1903
This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Vesta Case with a Gilt interior. The vesta case is oblong with floral engraving to front and back and a triangular blank cartouche on the front. There is a ring at the top for attaching to a watch chain or chatelaine.
The vesta case was made in Birmingham by William H Haseler and dates to 1903. The firm was founded by William Hair Haseler in around 1849 in Birmingham. Already a successful company, they will be forever known for their association with Liberty & Co of London for whom they produced the Cymric range of silverware and the Tudric range of pewterware during the first quarter of the 20th century. After WW2 they became known as Haseler & Restall and remained in business into the 1970s.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of truly miniscule dings plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service, much of it probably spent in a pocket or handbag. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta case is 4.8cm / 1.9ins from ring to strike and 2.7cm / 1in across. It weighs in at 17.9g / 0.63oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the vesta, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the W H H makers' mark for William Hair Haseler.
