Edwardian Silver Mini Candlestick, Chester, 1901
This is a sweet Edwardian Sterling Silver Miniature Candlestick. The candlestick has a domed circular base, a tapered stem and a cylindrical sconce with a broad rim. It will hold a candle 1cm in diameter. This could have been used on a desk for lighting sealing wax (it has definitely been used for a candle) or placed in a large doll's house.
The candlestick was made by renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1901. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.
Condition is good, with just a few truly tiny dings in the stem plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The candlestick is 5.1cm / 2.4ins high, 2.3cm / 0.90ins in diameter across the base and weighs in at 8.7g / 0.31oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the domed base, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter A for 1901 and the J D over W D makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
