Edwardian Silver Cream Jug, Chester, 1907 Edwardian Silver Cream Jug %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug has a round base, a bulbous body, a broad lip and a scroll handle. The front is engraved with a crest of a left arm in armour holding a two headed dart, which is probably the crest of the Rivers family, although there are several variations on this crest used by different families.

The cream jug was made by silversmiths J & R Griffin of Birmingham and assayed in Chester in 1907. Brothers Joseph & Richard Griffin founded their firm in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter in 1895 but a large percentage of their work was assayed in Chester. They made a wide range of silverware before they ceased trading in 1926.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cream jug is 7.6cm / 3ins from lip to handle, 4.3cm / 1.7ins across and 5.5cm / 2.1ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 24.5g / 0.86oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the side of the body are a little rubbed, particularly the makers' mark, but can still be easily read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter G for 1907 and the J & R G makers' mark for J & R Griffin.
