Edwardian Silver Cigarette Case, Chester, 1903
Here we have a very attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The case is oblong with rounded corners and has a gilt interior. The outside is engraved to front and back with flowers and foliage with a blank cartouche in the centre at the front.
The cigarette case was made by the Rolason Brothers and assayed in Chester in 1903. The Rolason Brothers established their company in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in the mid-1880s. They made a wide range of small silver items for personal and table use and also registered a mark in Chester. They remained in business up until the late 1920s.
Condition is very good, with just a slight shallow bruise to the front, which is largely disguised by the decoration, and the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 8.6cm / 3.4ins long, 5.5cm / 2.2ins wide and 1.4cm / 0.55ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 69.9g / 2.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter C for 1903 and the R.Bs makers' mark for Rolason Brothers.
