Arts & Crafts Silver Chamberstick, Nathan & Hayes
Here we have a very distinctive Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver Chamberstick from the late Victorian period. The chamberstick is shaped as a circular leaf with curling edges and a double twig handle. The sconce is a plain cylinder and the removable nozzle has a similarly crimped leaf upper rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The chamberstick was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Nathan & Hayes and dates to 1890. George Nathan and Ridley Hayes began their partnership in Birmingham in the late 1880s. They are particularly known for their good quality silver tableware and domestic items, which they primarily assayed in Birmingham, and more personal items such as buckles, buttons and dressing table jars, which they mostly assayed in Chester. They remained in business up until around 1920.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would anticpate after over 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The chamberstick is 13.5cm / 5.3ins from rim to handle, 12.5cm / 4.9ins across and stands 4.8cm / 1.9ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 117.5g / 4.14oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the tray, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter q for 1890 and the N & H makers' mark for Nathan & Hayes.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the chamberstick.
