Arts & Crafts Silver Bowl, Hukin & Heath, 1883

Here we have an unusual and very striking Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver Bowl from the Victorian era. The textured bowl has a circular base with a wavy top rim, which is folded over at three points and folded outward at the other three, to create a sort of double trefoil effect. It is very distinctive.
The bowl was made in London by famous silversmiths Hukin & Heath and dates to 1883. Founded in Birmingham by Jonathan Hukin and John Heath in 1855, the firm is best known for its collaboration with Dr Christopher Dresser between 1871 and 1883 and their exhibitions of his groundbreaking designs for them at their London showroom. Although not specifically marked, this is such an unusual piece that it could be a Dresser design from the end of his association with the company.
Condition is good, with just a couple of small, shallow bruises on the body of the bowl plus the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 140 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 10.5cm / 4.1ins across and stands 5.2cm / 2ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 87.7g / 3.09oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the body below the top rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter H for 1883, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J W H over J T H makers' mark for Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath of Hukin & Heath.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bowl.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
