George V Silver Bonbon Dish, Henry Matthews, 1921 George V 1920s Silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is an attractive George V Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish. The dish has an oval base, pierced sides and a lozenge shaped top rim with beaded decoration. The initials D C are elegantly engraved on the inside base.

The bonbon dish was made in Birmingham by Henry Matthews and dates to 1921. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.

Condition is good, with just one very small ding in the base plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dish measures 10.7cm / 4.2ins by 8.5cm / 3.3ins and stands 3.4cm / 1.3ins high. It weighs in at 25.0g / 0.88oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, low down on the side of the dish, are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter w for 1921 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
