Art Deco Silver Swizzle Stick-Deakin / Francis-1937
This is a good quality Art Deco Sterling Silver retractable Swizzle Stick from the 1930s. The stick is opened by use of a slider on the body that opens it up for use and closes it securely when no longer needed.
Swizzle sticks were originally created in the 19th century for ladies in polite society to twirl the bubbles out of their Champagne in order to avoid them burping in public. In the more relaxed society of the roaring twenties they found a new role in swirling cocktails and every flapper girl worth her salt would carry one in her purse or evening bag.
This swizzle stick was made in Birmingham by the renowned silversmiths Deakin & Francis and dates to 1937. Originally founded in 1786, becoming Deakin & Francis in 1882, the firm remains in the Deakin family to this day.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 80 years of swirling! The slider mechanism operates smoothly. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The swizzle stick is 14.2cm / 5.6ins long when open and 9cm / 3.5ins long when closed. It weighs 5.1g / 0.18oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the body are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter N for 1937 and the D & F makers' mark for Deakin & Francis.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
