Art Deco Silver Mustard Pot, Deakin & Francis 1936
This is a stylish little Art Deco Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its original Blue Glass Liner. The mustard pot is cylindrical with a stepped bottom rim, a stepped lid and finial and a D-shaped handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The mustard pot was made in Birmingham by Deakin & Francis and dates to 1936. Deakin & Francis have a proud history as silversmiths and jewellers dating back to 1786. The firm is still run by members of the Deakin family today. They are England's oldest manufacturing jewellers and still working from the same building that they started in back in the 18th century.
Condition is good with just a shallow bruise to the bottom rim of the pot and a little give in the hinge of the lid plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. There are no chips or cracks in the glass liner and the pot is perfectly usable today. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot measures 5.3cm / 2.1ins from rim to handle, 4cm / 1.57ins across the body and is 4.1cm / 1.61ins high. With out the glass liner it weighs in at 18.2g / 0.64oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 40.5g / 1.4oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the bottom rim, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter M for 1936 and the D & F makers' mark for Deakin & Francis. In addition there is a partial set on the inside of the lid showing the lion passant and the date letter M.
