Art Deco Silver Matchbook Case, Adie Bros, 1928
This is a lovely Art Deco Sterling Silver Matchbook Case with a gilded interior. The matchbook case is made by Adie Brothers Ltd in Birmingham and dates to the height of the Art Deco era in 1928. Adie Brothers Ltd was formed by Percy Adie in 1906 by the merger of other silver and antique jewellery companies. They were at their peak from the 1920s to the 1950s before finally closing in 1968.
This matchbook case has classic Art Deco engine turned decoration to the top and bottom and a gilded interior. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. Matchbooks were very common in the interwar years and were popular as they were not so bulky as a lighter or a box of matches. Fitted securely inside this elegant case, the matches would slip easily into a pocket or handbag for an evening out.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents, quite unusual for an item that was often rattling around in a pocket or handbag. The gilt interior is in good condition and both the hinge and catch work perfectly.
The case is 6cm / 2.4" long and 4.2cm / 1.6" wide. It weighs a very respectable 36g / 1.27oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the case are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "D" for 1928 and the distinctive A Bros Ltd makers' mark for Adie Brothers Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
