Art Deco Silver Table Lighter, Charles Boyton 1930

Here we have a superb quality Art Deco Sterling Silver Table Lighter. The lighter is in the form of a hexagonal chamberstick with a finger ring handle on one side and two cigar rests at diagonally opposite points. The hexagonal oil well is stepped and the wick protrudes from a circular top which unscrews to fill the reservoir with oil.
The table lighter was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Charles Boyton & Son and dates to 1930. The firm was founded in London by Charles Boyton (I) in 1825, based at a number of locations before finally settling in Clerkenwell. They established a reputation for fine workmanship and design that was maintained across four generations of Charles Boytons until, along with many other firms, they hit economic difficulties in the early 1930s. In 1934 a new company was formed called Charles Boyton & Son Ltd that continued into the 1970s but no members of the Boyton family were involved in this.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 90 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The lighter is 12.2cm / 4.8ins at its widest point, 9.5cm / 3.7ins across the base and stands 7.5cm / 2.9ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 102.9g / 3.63oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside base near the handle, are nice and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter F for 1930 and the distinctive C B & S in a trefoil makers' mark for Charles Boyton & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the table lighter.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
