Art Deco Silver Cigarette Case, Wm. Neale, 1935
Here we have a fine quality Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with engine turned decoration and a gilt interior. Both front and back have Odeon style lined decoration down the sides of the main engine turned panels. The cartouche is also in Odeon style and has the initials MOB neatly engraved in it. Perfect for any would be gangster!
The cigarette case is made in Birmingham by William Neale & Sons Ltd and dates to 1935. William Neale founded his firm of silversmiths in 1850, being joined by his sons in 1890. The business was taken over by Suckling Ltd in 1941.
Condition is very good for a cigarette case that spends most of its life in a pocket with other items. There is just one truly tiny ding on the front and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected. The gilt interior has some dark shading on the inside of the lid which may well clean off with the right treatment. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 8.2cm / 3.2ins high by 7cm / 2.8ins wide and weighs a very respectable 75.9g / 2.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the lid are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter L for 1935 and the W.N Ltd in a shield makers' mark for William Neale & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
