Edwardian Silver Cigarette Case, Sampson Mordan
Here we have a stylish, superb quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with a Gilt Interior. The oblong case has ribbed decoration to both front and back with a blank circular cartouche on the front.
The cigarette case was made in London by famous silversmiths Sampson Mordan & Co and dates to 1904. Sampson Mordan established his company in London in 1815 and in 1822 he was granted the world’s first patent for a mechanical pencil. It was these that would remain the backbone of the company’s fortunes. After a partnership with Gabriel Riddle from 1823 to 1836 was dissolved, the firm was renamed S. Mordan & Co, with Sampson’s sons, Sampson Jr and Augustus, taking over in 1843. Alongside their pencils business, the firm specialised in small silver novelties such as letter openers, bookmarks, decanter labels, pin cushions, inkwells and cigar cutters. In 1941 the factory was destroyed by enemy bombing and the firm ceased trading. They are one of the most widely collected of all silversmiths.
Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of good service. The hinge and the clasp are in good working order and both the elastic bands are present inside. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 8cm / 3.1ins by 6.8cm / 2.7ins and 1.6cm / 0.63ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 103g / 3.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter II for 1904 and the S.M & Co makers' mark for Sampson Mordan & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
