Art Deco Silver 3 Piece Cruet Set, 1933/34
This is an incredibly stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver 3 Piece Cruet or Condiment Set in a diamond shape. It comprises of an open salt, a pepper shaker and a mustard pot. All three pieces stand on hexagonal diamond shape bases and this hexagonal diamond is reflected in the rims of the mustard and salt and around the body of the pepper. The slots in the lid of the pepper shaker are in a distinctively Deco Odeon pattern incorporating a diamond shape to continue the theme.
This is a very high quality set, well made in a good gauge of silver and with great design. The pieces were made in Birmingham by Smith & Bartlam, with the mustard pot dating to 1933 and the salt and pepper dating to 1934. Edward Smith & William Bartlam were manufacturing silversmiths and jewellers who operated from premises in Caroline Street and Branston Street in Birmingham between 1902 and around 1950.
Whilst overall condition is good, there is a tiny amount of salt corrosion around the rim of the open salt and rather more beneath the blue glass liner, but this is not visible when the salt is in use. There is a small chip in the rim of the blue glass liner in the mustard pot and there are a couple of truly miniscule dings in the body of the pepper shaker. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt and mustard are 6.5cm / 2.6ins x 5.3cm / 2.1ins across the top. The salt stands 4.2cm / 1.6ins high. The mustard is 9.5cm / 3.7ins from rim to handle and stands 5.4cm / 2.1ins to the top of the finial. The pepper is 4.3cm / 1.7ins x 3.5cm / 1.4 ins at the widest part of the body and stands 9cm / 3.5ins high. The set of three pieces without the blue glass liners weighs in at a substantial 143.4g / 5.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of each piece are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter J on the mustard pot for 1933 and the date letter K on the salt and pepper for 1934 and the S & Bm makers' mark for Smith & Bartlam.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the set.
