Art Deco Large Silver Matchbox Cover, London, 1932
This is a very large George V Art Deco Sterling Silver Matchbox Cover standing on four bun feet. The cover is designed to hold a large household box of matches and would most probably have sat on a table for everyone to use. The cover is plain apart from a distinctively Art Deco logo featuring the letters P and J in a circle. This may be an individual's initials or the logo of a high class club or hotel.
The matchbox cover is made in London by S.J. Rose & Son and dates to 1932. Founded in the City of London around 1930, S.J. Rose & Son produced a wide range of silver items, many of them smoking related, and remained in business up until the late 1980s.
Condition is generally very good apart from the front left bottom corner where the foot has been pushed up somewhat. However it still sits perfectly steady on a flat surface. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
This is a very large matchbox cover measuring 12cm / 5.1ins long, 7cm / 2.8ins wide and 5.5cm / 2.2ins high. It weighs a very substantial 186.8g / 6.6oz of solid Sterling Silver and will certainly make a statement in any room.
The hallmarks on the strike side of the cover are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter r for 1932 and the S.J.R. makers' mark for S.J. Rose & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the matchbox holder.
