Art Deco Enamel Topped Powder Jar, B'ham, 1930
This is a beautiful Art Deco Cut Glass Powder Bowl with a Gold Guilloche Enamel on Sterling Silver lid. The glass bowl has a crosshatched and fan cut design on the base. The enamelled lid has two scallop shaped panels and two panels of oval spot decoration. The underside of the lid is gilded.
The powder bowl was made in Birmingham by Albert Carter and dates to 1930. Albert Carter established his business in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in 1917. His firm were particularly skilled at guilloche enamelling and it featured on many of their items such as dressing table sets, cigarette cases, powder bowls, bedside antique clocks and decorative boxes. The company ceased trading in the late 1950s.
Overall condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass bowl and just a little bruising around the centre of the enamel lid where the finial has been perhaps overtightened at some point in its life. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 8.3cm / 3.2ins in diameter and stands 6cm / 2.3ins high. The enamelled silver lid by itself weighs in at a very respectable 73.4g / 2.59oz and all together the bowl weighs 197.7g / 6.97oz.
The hallmarks, on the outside rim of the lid, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter F for 1930 and the A C makers' mark for Albert Carter.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the powder bowl.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
