4 x Victorian Silver Teaspoons, Walker & Hall 1886
This is a top quality set of 4 Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoons in the Old English Bead pattern. They are made in Sheffield by Walker & Hall and date to 1886.
What makes these spoons exceptional is the combination of the hallmark and the monogram. Walker & Hall was founded in the mid-1840s by George Walker and Henry Hall as an electroplating company. In the 1850s Walker's nephew John Edward Bingham joined the company and later rose to be Chairman. It was under Bingham that the company began making Sterling Silver items alongside the ESPN pieces. These four spoons have the JEB hallmark next to the famous Walker & Hall pennant. The monogram on the spoons is also JEB, which suggests they were the personal property of John Edward Bingham (later Sir John), the head of Walker & Hall at the time they were made.
The spoons are really well made in a heavy gauge of silver. Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial wear you would expect after over 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoons are each 13.1cm long and the set of four weighs a very substantial 90.5g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "T" for 1886, the Queen Victoria duty mark and both the JEB and W&H makers' marks for John Edward Bingham of Walker & Hall.
This is a really special set of teaspoons that would be a fabulous addition to any collection.
