2 x Victorian Teaspoons + Sugar Tongs, Sheff, 1890
This is a stylish Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoons with matching Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the Aesthetic style. The stems of the teaspoons and the arms of the sugar tongs are in a Bamboo design, a popular oriental motif in the late 19th century. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The teaspoons and tongs were made in Sheffield by the noted silversmiths Atkin Brothers and date to 1890. Tracing its roots back to Thomas Law in the mid-18th century, the Atkin family took sole control of the business in 1840, first as Henry Atkin & Co and then from 1853 as Atkin Brothers. The firm manufactured both silverware and electroplate in Sheffield and also had a London showroom. They ceased trading in 1958.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoons are each 11.4cm / 4.5ins long with the sugar tongs being 10.4cm / 4.1ins long. The set of three items together weighs in at a very respectable 59.9g / 2.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the backs of the bowls, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter X for 1890 and the H A makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers. In addition the spoons and tongs have the registered design number 89070 stamped on them, which shows that the original design dates to 1887.
