2 x Victorian Silver Topped Dressing Table Pots
Here we have a top quality pair of late Victorian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pots with Sterling Silver Lids. The pots have hobnail cut decoration all the way round the bodies and star cut decoration on the underside of the bases. The silver lids have large blank circular cartouches with embossed flowers and foliage all the way around them and are gilded on the inside. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
These good size pots would add a real touch of elegance to any dressing table or could be used on a desk to hold small items of stationery.
The pots are made in Birmingham by C.C. May & Sons with one dating to 1899 and one to 1900, although apart from the date they are a perfectly matched pair. Founded in 1813, Charles May's company specialised in silver mounted glassware and also a wide variety of silver thimbles. Based in London and Birmingham, they remained in business until around 1920.
Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the glass and just the superficial surface wear to the silver that has to be expected after 120 years of careful use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pots stand 7.3cm / 2.9ins high and are 6.2cm / 2.4ins in diameter. The two silver lids together weigh in at a respectable 42.8g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver and the pair of glass pots and lids together weigh in at 370.9g / 13oz.
The hallmarks on the sides of the lids are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter z for 1899 or a for 1900 and the CM makers' mark for C.C. May & Sons.
