2 x Victorian Silver Bonbon Dishes, Sheffield 1898 Victorian Silver Bonbon Dish %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a very attractive pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Bonbon Dishes. The dishes have extended octagonal bases, whilst the side panels have reeding at the bottom, pierced middle sections and embossed scroll rims.

These versatile dishes would originally have been intended for wrapped sweets but can also be used for nuts or snacks, for potpourri, for antique jewellery on a dressing table or for small stationery items on a desk.

The dishes are made in Sheffield by Cooper Brothers & Sons and date to 1898. Founded in 1866 by brothers Thomas Cooper and John William Cooper, the firm originally specialised in electroplated items but in the 1870s they began to produce good quality Sterling Silver items, especially flatware. They remained in business until they were bought out in the early 1980s.

Condition is very good with just a couple of tiny dings in the bases of the dishes and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each dish is 13.4cm / 5.3ins long, 9.9cm / 3.9ins across and stands 2.9cm / 1.1ins high. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 73.6g / 2.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the bases are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter f for 1898 and the T.C over J.W.C in a shield makers' mark for Thomas Cooper and John William Cooper of Cooper Brothers & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dishes.
