2 x George V Silver Candlesticks, H Moreton, 1911
This is a handsome pair of George V Sterling Silver Dwarf Candlesticks. The candlesticks have square bases with beaded rims, which are weighted for stability, square domed centres and urn shaped sconces. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
These short candlesticks would traditionally have been used on a desk or dressing table but work equally well on a dining table or to add ambient lighting to any room.
The candlesticks were made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Moreton and date to 1911. Henry Moreton established his firm in Birmingham in 1899, registering marks at both the Birmingham and Chester assay offices. He made good quality candlesticks, trophy cups and a range of tableware from premises in the Jewellery Quarter. He remained in business until around 1930.
Condition is good, with just a few little dings around the rims of the bases plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bases of the candlesticks are 7.3cm / 2.9ins square and they stand 7.3cm / 2.9ins high. The pair together weigh in at 257.2g / 9.1oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the upper sides of the bases, are somewhat rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter m for 1911 and the distinctive H M in diamond frames makers' mark for Henry Moreton.
