2 x Art Deco Silver Sauce Ladles, Sheffield, 1932
This is a striking Pair of Art Deco Sterling Silver Sauce Ladles. The ladles have a distinctive geometric design on the front of the stems and a triangular motif on the undersides. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sauce ladles were made in Sheffield by Roberts & Belk and date to 1932. Roberts & Belk traced its history back to the firm of Furniss, Poles & Turner founded in 1810. William Briggs joined the firm in 1822 and later took Samuel Roberts as a partner. After William Briggs retired in 1863, Charles Belk joined and the firm became Roberts & Belk, the name they retained until they were bought by C.J. Vander in 1961. They were a very successful company producing a wide range of domestic silverware, tableware and flatware.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each ladle is 15.8cm / 6.2ins long and 4.5cm / 1.8ins across the bowl. The pair together weigh in at a substantial 97.4g / 3.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter p for 1932 and the R & B makers' mark for Roberts & Belk. They are also stamped with the registered design number 776560, which also dates the design to 1932.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the ladles.
