19th C. French Silver Serving Spoon, Ph. Berthier
This is a very decorative 19th Century French 950 Silver Serving Spoon. The upper side of the bowl has an enraved design of a bowl of fruit within a border of cherries and foliage whilst the underside has a fan of pin decoration. The stem has a thread border within which there is harebell flower decoration. The top of the stem has the initials R J elegantly engraved within the cartouche. Given the decoration, this was presumably originally intended for serving fruit put could be used for anything you wished.
The serving spoon was made in Paris by Phillippe Berthier and dates to between 1847 and 1883, the period in which this particular makers' mark was in use. Berthier started in business in 1841 but changed his mark from a well to a bird in 1847. He mostly made good quality tableware and a wide variety of spoons. Berthier's firm was bought by Alphonse Debain in 1883.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after this passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 24cm / 9.4ins long and 9cm / 3.5ins across the bowl. It weighs in at a very respectable 80.0g / 2.8oz of solid 950 grade silver.
The marks are stamped on the bottom corners of the bowl. On the right is the Minerva's head mark with the number 1 signifying that the spoon is 950/1000 grade silver (which is higher than Sterling's 925/1000). On the left is the lozenge makers' mark containing the letters P and B to either side of a bird, variously described as a woodcock or a duck, which is the mark of Phillippe Berthier in use from 1847 to 1883.
