12 x Silver Teaspoons, Harrods Ltd, London, 1939
Here we have a fine cased set of twelve George VI Sterling Silver Teaspoons in the Chippendale pattern. There are a few slight variations on the Chippendale pattern depending on who made them and this set is in the Harrods version. The spoons are in a green box with a green velvet tray holding the spoons and a cream satin lining in the lid with the Harrods logo printed onto it. Green and cream are the traditional livery colours of Harrods Ltd.
The spoons are made in London by Harrods Ltd and date to 1939, just around the time of the outbreak of World War Two. The mark for Harrods is RWB for Sir Richard Woodman Burbidge who was chairman of Harrods, succeeding his father in 1917 and up until his death in 1945. Harrods' silver workshops were at this time located in Trevor Square, across the road from the main Harrods store, and there was also a small silverware showroom there. The Harrods name was always a guarantee of good quality pieces.
Condition is very good apart from one spoon which has two small dings in the bowl. The box is a little scuffed on the outside but the interior is good and the clasp and hinges are in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 10.9cm / 4.3ins long and the set of 12 together, unboxed, weighs in at a substantial 114.2g / 4.03oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the backs of the bowls, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter D for 1939 and the trefoil R W B makers' mark for Sir Richard Woodman Burbidge of Harrods Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoons.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
