Gillows
Gillows furniture. Lancashire England.
Founder Robert Gillow (1704-1772). Robert Gillow began making furniture in around 1730. He developed first a national and then an international reputation as a supplier of quality furniture to the upper middle classes, boasting the widest stock outside of London with workshops and showrooms in London and Lancaster.
Two of Robert's sons joined him in the business and the firm continued as 'Gillows' throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Towards the end of the 19th century the company, although successful, over extended itself leading to a partnership with 'Waring of Liverpool'. In 1903 Waring took over 'Gillows' and 'Waring and Gillows' was established.
