Berlin Porcelain
Berlin porcelain -The Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin. (KPM)
Founded by King Frederick II of Prussia (known as Frederick the Great) in 1763. Before this two other attempts had been made to establish a porcelain factory. The first attempt was made by Wilhelm Caspar Wegely but the company was dissolved in 1757.
The second attempt was made by Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. He was successful for awhile but the end came due to a lack of finance. The porcelain made by Wilhelm Caspar Wegely and Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky are sought after today but are rare collector's items.
The business became a success under the ownership of Frederick II. From then on, it was called the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin ("Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin").
