Winston Churchill Association Silver Humidor 1952
Stunning and rare silver and enamel tobacco box 1952
This is a very beautifully made and rare English sterling silver box with an exquisite enamel portrait of Churchill seated on an armchair.
The enamel portrait is of very high quality and is very detailed with the face clearly visible as well as details such as the fob chain, details on the trousers and waistcoat. The quality is amazing taking into consideration that enamelling is done by firing crushed coloured glass at high temperatures.
What makes this silver humidor even more rare and desirable is the elegant style inscription which reads:
“With the good wishes of
Maidstone Round Table”
The box has full hallmarks as follows:
“WN & S’ for William Neale & Son
“Anchor” for the Birmingham Assay Office
“Lion Passant” the mark for English sterling silver
‘C’ which is the date letter for 1952
The general election took place on Thursday 25 October 1951 with Winston Churchill returning as as Prime Minister. This box would have been made and hallmarked in late 1951 with the letter for 1952 as this is the standard practice.
It is only thirty miles between Churchill’s home in Chartwell and Maidstone and Churchill visited Maidstone often. We believe that this humidor was presented to Winston Churchill to congratulate him on his victory. This makes this humidor possibly unique and highly desirable.
A plain ordinary William Neale & Son silver humidor/cigarette box is available for £70. It has no enamelled portrait and no inscription.
This box measures (L) 90mm x (W) 80mm x (D) 35mm
It weighs 240g
Please note that this box is 65 years old and it has some minor blemishes. There is a small amount of tarnish that should easily come clean. There is a small, linear dent towards the left of the enamelled portrait and a dent on one of the corners. There is a smell of tobacco when the box is opened.
As with all high quality pieces of silver, the main body of the box is fully and hallmarked and then the lid is also partially marked. The maker’s mark is slightly faded but still decipherable
These are minor blemishes and fade into insignificance when you take into account the overall excellent condition and the rarity of a piece that is associated with one of the greatest political leaders in world history.
All of our ancient art is guaranteed to be as described and come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Please note that this piece will be sent fully insured.
Discounts are available on multiple purchases and prices are negotiable within reason.
