Vintage Silver Compact, Kigu, London, 1965
This is a very smart Vintage Sterling Silver Powder Compact with Mirror from the 1960s. The compact is square with engine turned decoration to back and front. The front also has a square border of floral decoration and a blank cartouche. Inside there is an inner tray covering the powder which has the distinctive Kigu logo on it and the mirror set into the lid.
The compact was made by the renowned firm KIGU of London and dates to 1965. KIGU began life in Budapest, Hungary when Gustav Kiaschek took the first two letters of his last and first names to create KI-GU. His youngest son, George, moved to London in the late 1930s and founded KIGU of London. During the heyday of powder compacts in the 1940s, 50s & 60s, KIGU were one of the most famous names and created many different designs in a wide variety of materials. In the early eighties the brand was sold and is now part of a group that also contains Stratton and Mascot.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time, especially for an item that spends much of its life in a handbag. The hinge and catch are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The compact is 7.1cm / 2.8ins square and 0.8cm / 0.31ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 117.3g / 4.1oz.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter k for 1965 and the K Ld makers' mark for KIGU of London Ltd,
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the compact.
