Victorian Silver Teaspoons & Tongs, London, 1897
Here we have a luxurious and very ornate Cased Set of Six Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoons plus Sugar Tongs. The teaspoons and tongs are both decorated with an elaborate scroll design along the full length of the stems. The case is equally elegant with an olive green satin lining and dark green velvet tray. The spoons and tongs have no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The set is made by Josiah Williams & Co and assayed in London in 1897. Based in Bristol, Josiah Williams & Co were the largest and most successful English silversmiths outside of London, Birmingham & Sheffield. As Bristol didn't have an assay office, the firm sent their silverware to London to be hallmarked. The set is in a case from the retailer Z. Barraclogh & Sons of Briggate in Leeds.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the minimum of superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 125 years of good service. The outside of the box is a little scuffed but the inside is in very nice condition and the hinges and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 11.1cm / 4.4ins long whilst the tongs are 9.9cm / 3.9ins long. The full set of teaspoons and tongs, unboxed, weighs in at a substantial 100.8g / 3.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are a little rubbed, particularly the makers' marks but can still be clearly read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter b for 1897 and the GJ over DF makers' mark for George Jackson and David Fullerton of Josiah Williams & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
