Victorian Silver Teaspoon Goldsmiths Alliance 1873
This is a smart Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon has the initial C elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The teaspoon was made in London by The Goldsmith's Alliance and dates to 1873. The firm was founded in the City of London by Adey Bellamy Savory in 1812. Savory was of Huguenot descent and was both a silversmith and a dealer in foreign coins. His sons Joseph and Albert Savory became partners in 1833 and the firm became A.B. Savory & Sons. They had both manufacturing and retail premises in the City. The company was managed by first William Smily and then Samuel Smily between 1855 and 1879 the latter overseeing the change of name to The Goldsmiths Alliance Ltd in 1866. In 1893 they were absorbed by The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company.
Condition is good with just a little wear to the tip of the spoon plus the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after 150 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 14.5cm / 5.7ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 22.0g / 0.77oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter s for 1873, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the S.S makers' mark for Samuel Smily of The Goldsmith's Alliance.
Shipping in the UK is £4.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
